Arya Maitreya Mandala was founded 1933 by Lama Anagarika Govinda in Darjeeling, India. Lama Govinda was a scholar, writer, mystic, painter and poet. He became widely known for his books "The Way of the White Clouds" and "Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism".
Lama Govinda received the inspiration for the creation of this order from his Tibetan teacher Lama Ngawang Kalsang, called Tomo Geshe Rimpoche. Ngawang Kalzang saw Maitreya as a model for a spiritual life today, which is focused on the needs of the future. Maitreya, the future Buddha, was prophesised to come by Buddha Shakyamuni (Gautama).
Based on the oral teachings and writings of Lama Anagarika Govinda the order is working towards a spiritual practice that suits the requirements of the present and future.
In accordance with this the Order tries to work out the core of Buddhist philosophy, ethics and meditation for the people today. The teaching of meditation is individual and has to suit the personal situation and the particular progress of the practitioner.
In 1952 the order started its work in the West and created communities in Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Hungary, The Netherlands and Austria, the United States and Singapore.
